pinewood derby is all wrong...too much variation in the kits(tolerance of materials), the level of craft skill(carving, etc..) and then there's always the cheating...

the only real way to make it fair is to break the scores up based on the statistic of weight. a heavier car gets less points [because of higher top speed]

you put a rule or two like that in there and it changes the dynamic entirely, and when you're weighing cars, its not the sawmill daddy who suffers. it's the daddy who fishes.
